An earthquake of 5.1 magnitude with its epicenter in southeastern Los Angeles ( California , USA ) was incorporated without major damage but many nerves due to the nearly 40 aftershocks recorded since the quake last night.

The U.S. Geological Survey ( USGS) said the quake struck at 21:09 pm local time with its epicenter between the towns of La Habra and Brea in Orange County and a depth of 7.5 kilometers.



The USGS continues recounting the aftershocks already reached 38 , according to its latest statement.

" The sequence of aftershocks could continue for days or weeks but probably have less frequency and magnitude as time passes ," the USGS.

Despite the continuing aftershocks , the Fire Department of Los Angeles said they are no longer on alert for earthquake damage and indicated that children are registered .

"Fortunately , there have been no significant damage to 756 miles from our jurisdiction," the department said in a statement.

Local authorities have indicated through their Twitter accounts the quake caused broken windows and ducts , with gas and water leaks .

The utility Southern California Edison said about 2,000 customers were without power following the quake.

Authorities said they had been instructed to check bridges, dams , railways and other infrastructure to identify damage.

" BIG ONE"

Seismologists believe that there is a probability of 98 percent that the "Big One" , an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 or higher with origin in the San Andreas fault , affecting the Southern California over the next thirty years.

Official estimates indicate that tremor directly cause 2,000 deaths and 53,000 wounded , and the collapse of 1,500 buildings , including skyscrapers, and considerable damage 300,000 buildings.

These figures could double in the days after the earthquake because of the uncertainty , the predictable problems of energy supply, water and food , but above all , of the fires.
